Aims of religious studies

Trinity Academy Halifax is a Church of England academy. The scheme for learning in RS has been informed by the 2017 Leeds & York Diocesan Syllabus for Religious Education, GCSE AQA Religious Studies A, GCSE Edexcel Religious Studies B and the Understanding Christianity resources.

This principle aim incorporates the following aims of Religious Education in Church schools:

  • To enable pupils to know about and understand Christianity as a living faith that influences the lives of people worldwide and as the religion that has most shaped British culture and heritage.
  • To enable pupils to know and understand about other major world religions and non-religious worldviews, their impact on society, culture and the wider world, enabling pupils to express ideas and insights.
  • To contribute to the development of pupils’ own spiritual/philosophical convictions, exploring and enriching their own beliefs and values.

Appropriate to their age at the end of their education in Church schools, the expectation is that all pupils are religiously literate and as a minimum pupils are able to:

  • Give a theologically informed and thoughtful account of Christianity as a living and diverse faith.
  • Show an informed and respectful attitude to religions and non-religious worldviews in their search for God and meaning.
  • Engage in meaningful and informed dialogue with those of other faiths and none.
  • Reflect critically and responsibly on their own spiritual, philosophical and ethical convictions.

The curriculum

All students in years 7-10 study a core RE programme. The programme comprises the teachings of a variety of religions and links to wider topics which broaden students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural education.

Phase One

In Phase One, students receive one hour per week of Religious Studies, of which at least two thirds form the study of Christianity.

Term 2 Was Jesus special? Why should we care for the planet?
Term 3 An introduction to Judaism Good/bad, right/wrong, how do I decide?
Term 4 An introduction to Islam Why is marriage and family important?
Term 5 What do Muslims believe? Does religion promote peace in the World?
Term 6 Tanzania Reflection of Phase 1 RS: What have we learned?

Phase Two

In Phase Two, all students completed the Edexcel GCSE short course in Religious Studies (B), in one lesson per week. Students who choose RS as an option complete the full course, receiving an additional 2 lessons per week.

Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies B

Students complete the following units as part of the short course:

  • Paper One: Religion and Ethics (Christianity)
    • Beliefs
    • Marriage and the Family
  • Paper Two: Religion, Peace and Conflict (Islam)
    • Beliefs
    • Crime and Punishment

Students who have opted to complete the full course complete the units below, in addition to the short course content:

  • Paper One: Religion and Ethics (Christianity)
    • Living the Religious Life
    • Matters of Life and Death
  • Paper Two: Religion, Peace and Conflict (Islam)
    • Living the Religious Life
    • Peace and Conflict

Wider academy life

The academy values of Empathy, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility play an integral part in the curriculum for life programme and all students and staff take part in a daily 2 minute silent reflection, aimed to provide space and time for thinking and reflecting on a world event.

These values are underpinned by annual whole school events such as the whole school act of remembrance, the Christmas Minster visit and Easter service. These events also reflect the academy’s religious ethos.
